My mother, Celia Neustadt Byer, the daughter of a famous Rabbi, came to the United States from Russia and Poland in 1903 when she was just one year old. Rabbi Neustadt established the forerunner of the modern Hebrew school in Indianapolis. My father, Herbert Byer, born in Cincinnati was also raised with Jewish tradition and values. The result was that my two sisters and I grew up with a strong sense of Jewish identity. For me, giving generously to the Columbus Jewish Foundation is to strengthen Jewish presence in our city and to make sure its institutions and agencies flourish and maintain their ability to serve every member of the Jewish community.
